Contabo Alternatives That Are Actually Reliable in 2026

Most people look at a Contabo plan and stop at the memory number. Eight gigabytes for the price of a coffee sounds like a win. The catch is that Contabo puts many customers on the same physical machine. When that machine gets busy, your share of the processor can shrink. Light work often feels fine. Steady work under load can slow down. Support is tickets only, and some replies take a day or more. That is the real choice this page covers.

We earn commissions when you shop through the links below. Prices and policies checked: October 2026. If the order page shows a different number, trust the order page.

Contabo gives you the most memory and disk for the money. The speed can move. This page tells you when that is fine and when you should leave. It does not cover the Netcup sold-out story, the Hetzner passport check, or the RackNerd mail problem. Those have their own pages.

Start with the job you have

A virtual private server is a rented computer in a data center. You get your own slice of processor, memory, and disk. Contabo packs many of those slices onto each physical machine. That packing is why the memory number looks so good. It is also why the speed can change.

How the low price works

Contabo’s price exists because many virtual machines share the same physical cores and the same network connection. The entry plan is called Cloud VPS 4. It has about 4 cores, 8 GB of memory, and 100 GB of disk. On a long term the listed price is roughly €4.40 to €5.28 a month. On a monthly term it is about €6.60. The page often shows the long-term number.

The entry plan has a 200 Mbit/s port. Traffic is unmetered, but a fair-use rule applies. Bigger plans step the port up: 300 Mbit/s, then 600, 800, and finally 1 Gbit/s.

A quiet site, a backup box, or a test server often does not notice the sharing. A production app that needs steady speed under load will feel it. People on forums report slowdowns at busy hours. We did not collect a 30-day chart. The pattern is known. The exact number on your node is not.

Support is tickets only. Documented waits of a day or more exist. If a slow reply costs you more than the savings, leave.

Price per GB of memory

Contabo usually wins this column. On an 8 GB plan the numbers look like this (net euros, October 2026, before tax and location fees):

Host / planMemoryApprox net / monthEuros per GBEntry port
Contabo Cloud VPS 48 GB€5.28–6.60€0.66–0.83200 Mbit/s
Hetzner CX338 GB€8.49–9~€1.06Varies
OVHcloud VPS-28 GB€8.50–9.50~€1.101 Gbps class
Netcup VPS 1000 G12.58 GB~€12.18 (12 months)~€1.52Fair-use rule
IONOS VPS L+8 GB€22–25~€2.80Unmetered
UpCloud Starter8 GB€18–29€2.30–3.60Higher
Scaleway DEV1-L8 GB€30+~€3.80400 Mbps
Kamatera (custom)8 GB€30–40~€4Metered

The win is packing, not steady speed. Longer terms are cheaper. Locations outside the EU add a monthly surcharge. Quote the live checkout.

Seven hosts

Each of these solves a different part of the Contabo trade. None of them is a free upgrade. Prices below are approximate net figures from October 2026. Live checkout wins.

Hetzner

Hetzner is the usual next step when you need steadier processor speed. The CX line (cost-optimized, shared cores) gives more consistent performance than Contabo’s dense packing for many users. CX33 is the 4-core / 8 GB plan: about €8.49–9 a month in Europe (Germany or Finland), 80 GB NVMe, and 20 TB of traffic. The cheaper CX23 (2 cores / 4 GB) is often sold out. CPX plans (regular performance) cost more and stay in stock more often. US locations do not sell the cheap CX plans. New accounts can be held for a passport photo or a prepayment on a card in your name. Support is tickets. Take it when you need steadier speed for a real app, you can pass the check, and the plan is in stock. Skip it if you will not upload ID or if only the expensive CPX line is available. The passport and stock detail lives on the Hetzner alternatives page.

Netcup

Netcup is the European neighbor when you want more disk or a lighter check than Hetzner. New orders are the G12.5 family (from 22 September 2026). VPS 1000 G12.5 is 4 cores, 8 GB, 128 GB SSD, about €14.01 monthly or €12.18 on a 12-month term. Disks are smaller than the old G12 plans. Traffic is unmetered with a fair-use throttle (more than 2 TB in 24 hours can drop the port to 200 Mbit/s). The check is lighter than Hetzner’s. Popular plans can still sell out. Take it when you want more disk or a lighter European check. Skip it if the order button is dead. Stock and the traffic rule live on the Netcup alternatives page. This page does not retell the full G12.5 change.

OVHcloud

OVHcloud runs its own network and has strong European coverage. The VPS-2 plan is the 4-core / 8 GB class: about €8.50–10 a month, 75 GB NVMe, unmetered traffic, and a 1 Gbps port in most locations. Daily backup of the previous 24 hours is included. Locations span France, Germany, and other EU sites plus some US cities. Public Cloud lines recently unbundled local disk and IPv4, which raised the effective price on those products. Support is tickets plus a knowledge base. Take it when you want an EU company that runs its own network and can accept the current price. Skip it if the unbundled Public Cloud total is higher than you want.

Scaleway

Scaleway is a French EU-only cloud. The DEV1-L plan is 4 cores and 8 GB: about €30.66 a month before tax (hourly ~€0.042). PLAY2-MICRO is similar size at a higher rate. Egress is included; local storage and a public IPv4 are often extra. Hourly billing and savings plans are available. Support is tickets. Take it when you want a French EU cloud and will pay more per GB of memory. Skip it if packing is the only thing you care about.

IONOS

IONOS offers simple VPS+ plans with NVMe storage and unmetered traffic. VPS L+ is 4 cores, 8 GB, 240 GB NVMe, listed at $25 a month on a yearly term (promotional rate about $8 for the first three months). Locations include the US, UK, Germany, and Spain. Features include root access, DDoS protection, a firewall, and 24/7 support (including an AI assistant). The price per GB is higher than Contabo. Take it when you already use IONOS and want the simplest checkout. Skip it if you came for the Contabo memory number.

UpCloud

UpCloud is the choice when you will pay for faster support and stronger storage options. Starter plans start around €3–3.50 for 1 GB and rise to about €18–24 for an 8 GB / 4-core configuration with standard SSD and 500 Mbit/s. Premium plans add MaxIOPS storage (claimed over 100k read IOPS) and a higher SLA. Multiple continents are available. Support is faster than Contabo’s ticket-only path for many users. Take it when you need faster support and will pay. Skip it if the bill is the main reason you looked at Contabo.

Kamatera

Kamatera is fully customizable with hourly or monthly billing. A sample 4-core / 8 GB configuration is typically €30–40 a month depending on CPU type, location, and storage. Entry starts at $4 for 1 core / 1 GB / 20 GB NVMe and 5 TB traffic. There are 20+ locations (US cities, Europe, Asia, Middle East). CPU types include availability, general purpose, and dedicated. Extra storage is about $0.05 per GB. Support includes 24/7 chat and tickets. Take it when you need a specific city or hourly billing and will pay the premium. Skip it if you want the cheapest memory.

Also-rans (why they are not in the main seven)

DigitalOcean, Vultr, and Linode (now Akamai) give steadier speed and cleaner tools. They also cost several times more per GB of memory. They are a different product. AWS Lightsail, Google Cloud, and Azure sit even further away on price. Clouvider, InterServer, Cherry Servers, GreenCloudVPS, and HostHatch show up in “no passport” or “Netcup sold out” conversations. Those jobs already have pages. RackNerd is the cheap US yearly box. The usual problem there is mail reputation, not Contabo-style packing. BuyVM and other pure density bargains share Contabo’s model more than they replace it. They are named so you know they were considered. They are not the job this page owns.

Setup fee and location fee

Setup fees are not fully gone. A monthly or short term can still add a one-time fee. A longer prepay (12-month class) often removes it. Locations outside the EU add a monthly surcharge. Quote the checkout total. Do not claim “no fees.” On Cloud VPS 4 the European base is the starting point. US, UK, Asia, and Australia cost more each month. The 24-month rate is what many comparison sites quote. The monthly rate is higher. Live checkout wins.

When Contabo is fine

Stay when the job is staging, backups, CI, a lab, a low-traffic site, or any work that is bursty rather than steady. The memory and disk number is the product. Light loads often do not notice the shared processor. A backup box does not need the same consistency as a production app under load. The 200 Mbit/s port is enough for many of those jobs.

Why you should not switch

Do not switch just because a forum post showed slowdown on a busy node. If your current Contabo box is quiet and the bill is low, the packing is working for you. Switching throws away the price and the data you already have. Only leave when the variance is actually hurting the job — a slow app under load, a missed ticket, or a real need for steadier speed. The alternatives cost more per GB of memory for a reason.

This is not the Netcup, Hetzner, or RackNerd page

This page is the Contabo packing question. The Netcup alternatives page owns the sold-out story and the lighter European check. The Hetzner alternatives page owns the passport check and the fact that the cheap plan is Europe-only. The RackNerd page owns the cheap US yearly box and the mail problem. Link them when that is the next job. Do not answer those questions here. A Contabo US location fee is real. RackNerd is the other cheap US option for the mail discussion, not for the memory number.

FAQ

Is Contabo reliable in 2026?
It is reliable enough for light and staging work. The model is dense shared processor. Sustained load can show slowdowns. Light workloads often do not notice. Support is tickets only. Some people wait a day or more. We did not test this week.

Does Contabo oversell?
Yes. Overselling is how the price exists. Many virtual machines share the physical cores. Steal under sustained load is the common complaint. Light work often does not notice.

Why is Contabo so cheap?
Packing. Many customers share the same machine. You trade steady speed and fast support for the memory and disk number.

Does Contabo charge a setup fee?
Setup fees are not fully gone. Monthly and short terms can still carry a one-time fee. Longer prepay often removes it. Non-EU locations add a monthly surcharge. Quote the checkout.

What is the best Contabo alternative?
There is no single best. Steady processor for a real app: Hetzner if the check passes and the plan is in stock. More disk or lighter European check: Netcup. Faster support: UpCloud. Staging or lab: stay on Contabo.

Is Contabo fine for production?
It can be fine for production that tolerates variance — staging, backups, CI, low-traffic sites, lab. For a real app that needs steady processor under load, leave for Hetzner or a less dense host.

Does Contabo have good support?
Support is tickets only. Documented waits of a day or more exist. Do not expect chat or a same-hour reply. If you need faster support and will pay, look at UpCloud.

Contabo vs Hetzner — which should I pick?
Pick Contabo when the memory and disk number is the product and the work is light or intermittent. Pick Hetzner when you need steadier processor speed and you can pass the check and the plan is in stock. See the Hetzner alternatives page for the passport detail.
